Ontario’s fall forecast: October will be warm, but winter weather ‘will strengthen’ laterSEDI News

Ontarians can expect a warmer-than-normal October, but the wintry weather is likely to “come in strong” later in the fall, Global News meteorologist Anthony Farnell predicts.

Fall officially begins Thursday and with it comes cooler temperatures.

“Very rarely do you see a pattern change to bring an extended period of colder than normal weather (that) coincides with the actual start of fall, but here we are,” Farnell said.

“Temperatures will be cold enough to bring out the sweaters and jackets for the rest of September.”

Farnell noted that September has been very warm so far and, in turn, the Great Lakes are still very mild.

He said that will cause some early-season lake-enhanced precipitation in places, which is “a possible sign of what’s ahead in the season as the really cold air comes in.”

But Farnell said if you like sunny and mild days, there’s some good news.

“October is shaping up to be a warmer than normal month across much of southern Ontario and potentially across Canada,” he said.

After October, however, it is expected to cool down.

“There are signs that winter weather will be strong this year — especially in late November and December,” Farnell said.

“According to computer models and our seasonal forecast, colder than normal temperatures and lake effect snow are much more likely, factoring in with similar global weather patterns in past years.”
