Spokesman Gabrielle Nadeau-Dubois says party members will take the oath so they can enter the legislature and quickly introduce a bill to make the pledge optional.

Quebec Solidaire’s reversal is in response to a decision earlier this week by the speaker of the legislature, who said the oath is mandatory to the king and that the sergeant-at-arms is authorized to expel members who do not comply.

The Nadeau-Dubois decision alienates three recently elected members of the Parti Québécois, who continue to refuse to swear an oath to the king.

Nadeau-Dubois says the speaker’s decision is disappointing, but a Québec Solidaire spokesperson says her party needs to sit in the legislature to pass legislation making the oath optional.

Coalition Avenir Quebec house leader Simon Jolin-Barret has said the government is ready to move quickly to make the oath optional.
