Southern Ontario could see record-high temperatures on Saturday, but strong winds will be the price to pay for the unusually warm weather.

Environment Canada issued a special weather statement for all of southern Ontario on Friday, warning that the region can expect to see strong winds starting Saturday afternoon before easing later in the day.

Gusts of 70 to 80 km/h or even 90 km/h are expected in some areas, the weather agency said.

“As a cold front moves closer to southern Ontario on Saturday, air ahead of this boundary will remain warm with record-highs as temperatures rise into the 20s,” said Global News meteorologist Ross Hull.

“Keep in mind that the normal or average high for this point in November is only in the high single digits.

“The price to pay for this unseasonal warmth will be south/southwesterly winds of 70 km/h or more. That’s why we have a special weather statement.”

Hull said wind warnings may be issued for lakeshores facing south or southwest, as that’s where winds will be strongest.

“Winds will intensify Saturday afternoon and will still be strong into the early evening, eventually easing later Saturday night,” Hull said, adding that loose items should be secured because they could blow away.

Both Hull and Environment Canada warned that some localized power outages were possible.

And Hull said the cold front that will pass through won’t actually cool things down that much.

“It won’t be record territory when it comes to Sunday temperatures, but daytime highs are above average with plenty of sunshine returning to the mid-to-high teens on Sunday,” he said.
