Uttar Pradesh: Cop sentenced to life imprisonment for shooting lawyerSEDI News

A court in Rae Bareli on Friday sentenced a 43-year-old police sub-inspector (SI) to life imprisonment in the 2015 murder of a lawyer on the premises of the Allahabad District and Sessions Court.

A Rae Bareli court on Friday fixed the quantum of sentence after convicting sub-inspector Shailendra Singh of shooting advocate Nabi Ahmed to death while acquitting Rashid Siddiqui, another accused in the case.

Shailendra was lodged in Rae Bareli jail.

Acting district government lawyer Ajay Maurya said, “A total of 10 prosecution witnesses were examined in the court. Rashid, who was acquitted, was booked on charges of criminal conspiracy. He was out on bail.”

According to the prosecution, Shailendra took out his service pistol on March 11, 2015 and fired at advocate Nabi Ahmed on the court premises after an altercation between the two.

The bullet hit Nabi who was later declared brought dead at the hospital. It is alleged that Shailendra threatened the lawyers present and ran away.

Nabi accused Shailendra, then stationed in Prayagraj, of helping Rashid in a case.

The victim’s father Shahid Siddiqui lodged an FIR at Kolnalganj Police Station in Prayagraj.

Upset by Nabi’s death, lawyers protested and resorted to stone pelting. The protesters also set up some
Vehicles on fire.

On the direction of the High Court, the trial of the case was transferred to Rae Bareli.
